TMT Bars – Thermo-Mechanically Treated Bars – An Introduction

There was a time when homes and commercial buildings in India was built with unprocessed iron rods and concrete slabs. The problem with this process was that rods would soon begin to rust away much more earlier than expected. This, in turn, affects the stability of the structures in the long run. Making them unsafe, unreliable, prone to frequent repairs, leakage due to rains and general dissatisfaction of the owner. TMT bars is a solution for all the above-mentioned problems, they are made according to universal standards of strength, rigidity and flexibility. The arrival of TMT bars has made structures more safe and reliable across acts of god. TMT Steel bars have also changed how we use concrete, instead of slabs, we now use concrete bars for better overall results.

What is TMT Bar?

The TMT in TMT Bars stand for Thermo-Mechanically Treated, they are manufactured with a solid and hard outer surface with a pliable inner core. These bars are by default resistant to corrosion and rust, making them apt for constructing sensitive structures such as high rise residential buildings and bridges in humid areas.

TMT bars and different Steel Grades

For starters, TMT bars are superior to conventional TOR steel bars. TMT bar grades are given grades according to their strength and rigidity.
The grades are

  • Fe 415
  • Fe 500
  • Fe 550
  • Fe 600

The higher grade, those TMT bars can be used for structures requiring industrial grade strength such as for bridges, airports, ports and any other structure which requires high rigidity. The lesser grade bars are for the general public, structures such as houses, apartments, and public halls.

Most people are not with sound knowledge when it comes to buying TMT bars, future homeowners need to know about the difference when buying TMT bars.
