TMT Bars according to These Earthquake Prone Zones in India


As the number of earthquakes hitting India increases, the quality of structures to withstand has also exponentially increased. The issue of surviving these jolts have become a matter of quality in the construction sector. The fact that India’s geology is as diverse as the population, different part of the country is affected by earthquakes in different degrees. TMT bars have greatly reduced the negative effects of earthquakes on the common man.

Seismic Zones In India

Before discussing the positive effects of TMT bars in overcoming earthquakes, let’s discuss earthquakes and India in general. Authorities associated with Bureau of Indian Standards have identified parts of the country as more prone to earthquakes. The Bureau of Indian Standards has divided the country into four distinct seismic zones. These are Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV and V. The regions under Zone V are the most earthquake-prone regions in India. The seismic zones are revised and re-evaluated from time to time.

It should be noted that around 60% of the country is vulnerable to earthquakes, Zones IV and V are of particular concerns. States of Gujrat and North East are the most earthquake-prone states of India. There are pockets of in between Kashmir and north India, where earthquakes are of great concern, but due to a lack of population concentration. The earlier mentioned states of great concern. The Indian plate continues to dive further under the Eurasian plate, making the ground above shaky.  Geologists have further warned that more Himalayan earthquakes may occur due to this growing pressure of the plates grinding together.

TMT Bars and Earthquakes

   The government has mandated to builder and contractors to use TMT bars as they are inherently earthquake resistant. Damage can be minimized as debris falling from the building can be greatly reduced as TMT bars give a reinforced compress structure which does not fall off. Fe415 has been an excellent option for earthquake-prone areas. Fe415 with its excellent balance of strength and bendability can withstand the pressure created when confronted with earthquakes.

  • Implement emergency evacuation plans for all structures
  • Practise and perfect emergency drills for workplaces
  • Design emergency exists with a planned exit strategy
