TMT reinforced steel is the ultimate solution for reinforcement of a commercial structure. What the steels provide are the necessary tensile strength and ductility that is needed for the structure to withstand the forces of nature effectively and increased longevity to structure. The TMT steels are used because of its high tensile strength and ductility, which is resulted from the QST process that the reinforced bar undergo.
Our last blog described the TMT steel bars and its importance as reinforcement for the construction of commercial buildings. More specifically, it described the standard IS 1786:2008 that every reinforced steel bar should conform to. The IS standard defines certain guidelines that must be followed when manufacturing the reinforced steel bar.

Nowadays TMT steels are commonly used in constructions. What is TMT? Why is it used than other types of steel? Well, before TMT was introduced Mild Steel (MS) bars, Cold Twisted Deformed (CTD) bars were primarily used with concrete for constructing buildings. Those steel were graded Fe 250 but their low strength was a problem for buildings requiring more strength.

The TMT in TMT Bars stand for Thermo-Mechanically Treated, it is a process of rapidly cooling down bars in the molten state. This cooling down process is either done spraying water at regular intervals. This regular interval will further define the characteristics of the bars. This interval of quenching of bars will give rise to different grades of TMT bars in fact. The goal here is to have a solid and hard outer surface with a pliable inner core. This outer shell is coated with a protective film, making them resistant to corrosion and rust, making them apt for constructing sensitive structures such as high rise residential buildings and bridges in humid areas. It is expected that in construction there will become unexpected surprises and in one of those many unexpected surprises not many of the same long-term effects as the need to bend TMT bars. Bending TMT bar is a tricky skill, there are some obvious downsides such as broken TMT bars. The long-term negative effects come from the breaking of the protective film from the surface of the TMT bars. These films are coats of special paints which does rust or corrosion to happen. This happens as TMT bars have a strong shell and a soft inner core, while outer shell can withstand rust and corrosion for a long long time as they come prepared with a protective coating.
